âCome see the garden,â he said,
And even though he wasnât
The right one,
I went.
Down I went,
By stone and water led
To a place where roses bloomed,
That once were red.
Tell me this, oh sensible self â
What should I believe?
Now that the very world
Has changed.

Dear Alma,
You see that I address you in a familiar way. I hope you will indulge me. Our recent correspondence has brought me such pleasure that I feel we have become friends.
Here there is no end to work. Since my return from Europe, I feel that I am hewing great things from an unyielding substance. In large part, this is because I am breaking new ground here at Miskatonic University â astonishing when you consider how much has already been done on this side of the Atlantic to lay the foundations of the new science of Genetics. I have found an attitude of relentless skepticism among my colleagues here, old and young alike. No amount of data, however painstakingly gathered, suits them. Nevertheless, I struggle on.
Progress has been made toward amassing a wealth of population data, for in this field quantification is all, as you must know. I have sent scouts to the outlying villages around Arkham, many of which are perfect hotbeds of the degenerate â ancient accumulations of decadent blood that has festered in isolation for centuries. Others are examples of the unfortunate results of indiscriminate miscegenation. I speak here of Dunwich and Bolton, respectively. Perhaps you recall those places from the years you lived here; in any case, I am even more persuaded that the Institute is appropriately situated.
I have finally moved into the house in which my Institute is located. Extensive renovations were needed to make the upper floors habitable, during which time I had to live in lodgings. The work was completed during my recent absence. Now I am well settled, with a staff of servants â mixed-race individuals from Bolton, I am sorry to report, but at least they lack the impertinent inquisitiveness which characterises so many Americans. (Forgive me for speaking so freely, but I hope that with you I may express myself frankly without risk of offence.).
I hope you will someday find it possible to pay me a visit here in Arkham. I am eager to show you my new quarters and the offices of the Institute. This house has proved to be remarkable in yet another way, which is quite delightful and an utter surprise. If I were a superstitious man, I would say that Fate has taken my hand and is leading me in the direction of the future. But I will refrain from revealing too much now, in the hope that I may share my discovery with you in person before too long.
